There are some exceptions to the rough history of Android tablets. Samsung, for instance, has managed to create a nice market for itself thanks to nice hardware and heavy Android customization. According to IDC, Samsung accounted for nearly a quarter of all shipments in Q1 2023, placing it at No. 2 behind Apple.

From there, things drop off precipitously. Huawei actually holds around 7% of the market in third place. That’s not surprising given its hardware quality, but the company has been in trouble with the U.S. government. Additionally, they have shifted the company away from Android and into HarmonyOS, its own homebrew.

Lenovo is the other Android tablet maker in the top five; Amazon is fifth, but Fire OS does not qualify by most measures. The company’s tablets run three different operating systems: Android, Windows, and Chrome OS.

Despite the fact that the operating system has not caught on with tablets the same way it has with handsets, we can definitely say it’s not for lack of effort. A little over a decade ago, Google tried its own hand at Android tablets after initially reluctance to port the mobile OS to a larger form factor.

In 2012, the company partnered with Asus on the Nexus 7 and Samsung for the Nexus 10. HTC built the Nexus 9 in 2014. In the following year, Google released the Pixel C, which marked a shift to first-party hardware following years of partnerships. As Google’s preferred tablet operating system, Chrome became the preferred operating system for the Pixel Slate in 2018. The switch didn’t last long, just like its predecessors.

When the Pixel Tablet was first teased in 2022, one major question loomed over the rest: Why should this time be any different? Google’s approach to tablet adoption has been marked by intense indecision, above all, in addition to standard adoption issues. Consumer electronics adoption is a slow burn, one that requires commitment. One gets the impression that the Google hardware team throws up its hands in frustration after each subsequent swing.

When the Pixel Tablet was fully unveiled at I/O, the answer seemed to be: this time will be different because the approach is different. To be fair, when the Home Hub launched initially, I wrote, “From a design standpoint, it is best described as a seven-inch tablet resting atop a speaker at a 25 to 30 degree angle.” Google’s smart screen resembled more than any other smart screen on the market at the time. It must not have been the only moment that I felt compelled to remove it for a moment.

Whether a tablet or a smart screen first is ultimately in the eye of the user is a matter of personal preference. However, I will say that Google made a smart decision by bundling the two together. At present, the tablet is only available as a bundle. Eventually, users may want to purchase the slate separately, but at this point it’s hard to get excited about the slate by itself.

This tablet offers a premium experience, offering a 10.95inch display with an impressive 2650 x 1600 resolution; its pixel density is greater than the 10th gen iPad’s (10.9-inch and 2360 x 1640 resolution). Plus, it has an enhanced battery life of 12 hours compared to the base iPad’s 10-hour rating. Furthermore, it ships with double the RAM and double the storage; 8GB and 128GB respectively in comparison to the iPad’s 4GB and 64GB. The cameras are a bit lower than those on the iPad at 8 megapixels each, but still good quality nonetheless.

Yet, Google’s past relationship with first-party hardware was always uneasy. When it released its own device, it generally lacked follow-through. Rather than letting existing hardware firms handle the heavy lifting, it preferred to let existing hardware firms do the heavy lifting. In the meantime, a few key things have changed:
